New Year’s Reminders for Homeowners & Shareholders

  1. Remove Holiday Decorations
After January 1st, holiday decorations should be removed from the exterior of your unit. While you may still be in the holiday spirit in January, your neighbors may not be. Additionally, Christmas trees should be properly disposed of or recycled. Don’t just assume you can leave your Christmas tree on the curb or by the dumpster if you live in an HOA, Condo, or Co-op community, as some communities may not have a way to dispose of them.
  2. Review Home Fire Safety
Brush up on fire safety. Hazards can still linger after all the holiday lights, electronics, and decorations are gone.
  3. Prevent Frozen Pipes in Your Home and Community Association
Don’t start the new year off with a pipe burst. Fortunately, there are steps you can take in your home to help avoid frozen pipes when the temperature drops.
  4. Prepare Your Home for Snow
Be prepared for snow and inclement weather all winter long. Whether this means stocking your car with snow scrapers, or stocking ice melt, it is best to be prepared ahead of time. Remember to store ice melt indoors in an air-tight container away from pets and children.
  5. Keep an Eye on The Weather
If you are guilty of infrequently checking the local weather forecast, then this may be a worthy goal for the new year. There are multiple ways to incorporate this in your daily life thanks to the different options available for keeping tabs on the weather.
  6. Set Home Geared New Year’s Resolutions This Year
If you need inspiration or some easy goals for the new year, try setting goals revolving around your home.
  7. Complete a Holiday Food Purge
Early January is a great time to organize and clean the fridge and pantry. So, take this chance to dispose of all the expired or tired holiday season food and pantry items.
  8. Organize and Clean in the New Year
Whether you just want to re-organize your home or are planning a big move or downsize, there are many local places where you can donate or sell unwanted items.
  9. Pets
Meet your pet’s winter safety needs. For example, make sure that they have adequate protection from the cold and ice melt if or when they go outside. Additionally, do not leave pets outside for extended periods of time when it is below freezing.
  10. Get More Involved in Your Community Association
There are many ways to become a more active community member. For example, you can get involved in your co-op, condo, or HOA, or increase the ways in which you socialize in your community,
  11. Review Your Community Gym Policies
If becoming more active is your goal in the new year, then make sure you review all rules and remember to be mindful of your neighbors who are also utilizing the amenity as well.
  12. Post-Holiday Noise Reduction
While it is important to be courteous to neighbors all year, brush up on tips for reducing noise in and out of your home.
  13. Check Your Home Toolbox
No home is truly complete without a toolbox, even if you rely on management for certain repairs and upkeep. Therefore, make sure your home toolbox is equipped for minor repairs in the event that you need to repair something on the fly. However, leave major repairs or alterations to the pros!
  14. Prevent Plumbing Headaches in the New Year
Be gentle with your home and/or building’s plumbing by only flushing and dumping appropriate items down the toilet or drain.
