July 4th Guide for Long Island Homeowners

Alert Your Property Manager and/or Superintendent If You…

  • Are experiencing maintenance-related issues or are unsure if a repair is the owner’s responsibility or the building’s responsibility.
  • Have any questions about your pool or common area operations and policies.
  • Have a building-related emergency (link to below).

Follow Security and Guest Policies

  • If required or applicable, alert the front security gate or management of any expected guests prior to July 4th.

Fireworks and Noise

  • Be considerate of pets when it comes to noise from fireworks and festivities. Noise policies are still in effect regardless of the holiday.
  • No fireworks are permitted in communities. In fact, most types of fireworks are illegal in New York State.
  • If attending an event outside the community, be sure to review these Sparkler Safety Guidelines from New York State. Consider opting for safe alternatives to fireworks and sparklers such as bubbles or glow sticks when celebrating Independence Day this year.

Barbecuing Safety in Co-ops, Condos, and HOAs

Utilizing Common Areas for July 4th Festivities

  • Some common areas may require reservations beforehand. If this is the case in your community, be sure to reserve areas in advance.
  • Clean up after yourself and your guests when using common areas for festivities of any kind.
  • Adhere to trash room policies, even after a party or other event.
  • As a precaution, remember to check for ticks on your pets and all household members when picnicking or lounging in grassy areas regardless of how much landscaping has taken place in or out of your co-op, condo, or HOA community.

Pool Policies for Community Associations

  • Review your pool’s guest policy, before inviting guests to celebrate.
  • Adhere to all community policies and review pool safety and etiquette.
  • Glass containers of any kind are prohibited in the pool area. Broken glass is a safety hazard because it can injure anyone with bare feet. Additionally, glass is difficult to find and retrieve if it ends up in the pool because it is clear.
  • Do not swim while impaired by alcohol or marijuana. Please note that the consumption of alcohol in the pool area is a health code violation as well.
  • Note if there is a lifeguard on duty at your community pool, and always swim with a buddy.

Stay Safe in the Heat This Independence Day

  • If your Independence Day festivities are outdoors, be sure to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen. In the event of extreme heat, limit your outdoor exposure.
  • Make sure that your home is properly prepared in the event of a heatwave.
  • Check on your elderly neighbors and anyone who is more vulnerable to extreme heat.
