How to Celebrate the Holidays During the Coronavirus Pandemic
As a result of the virus, the holiday season might be a little different this year. However, the holiday season can still be festive! Here are safe celebration alternatives for homeowners and community associations.
Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate the holidays during the coronavirus pandemic if you live in a community association:
Break out a favorite family holiday recipe like potato latkes, or sugar cookies and participate in our virtual recipe swap!
Get the tree and/or Chanukah Menorah out early this year to add a little extra joy at home this year.
Donate unused toys to a family in need. Some organizations have the option of donation by mail along with other pandemic-friendly (and community association-friendly) methods.
Host a holiday decoration contest with friends, family, or neighbors (check your community association on decoration policies beforehand).
Have a holiday movie marathon. Create a list of movies and submit it to your board to add it to your community newsletter (if applicable), or share the list with your neighbors.
Drive around the neighborhood and look for festive holiday displays with some hot chocolate and holiday music playing.
Host a virtual gift exchange: Mail gifts ahead of time, then open the gifts together on an assigned day through a virtual platform such as Google Hangouts or Zoom.
Host virtual holiday parties instead of having them in person this year (if you have vulnerable family members or cannot meet in person). For example, plan a virtual gingerbread house decorating party!
Create a holiday playlist or play your favorite holiday albums at home.
Prepare your household in the event of a covid case spike.
Start your holiday shopping early to avoid crowds and possible shipping delays. Doing this will help to keep trash rooms, vestibules, hallways, front porches, etc. from overloading from package deliveries. Therefore, it will also help you to avoid crowding in stores and in common areas.
Beware of theft around the holidays. Avoid displaying gifts in a location that are visible from the outside of your home.
With the cold weather rolling in, avoid frozen pipes in your home all winter, but especially during the holidays, as it can really put a damper on the season.
Health and Safety Reminders
This holiday season, be extra proactive in keeping your household and community safe and healthy with these health reminders:
Wear your face mask correctly anytime you are in public or in a common area of your community association.
Get a flu shot this year if you have not done so. Additionally, consider getting vaccinated against covid-19 or getting a booster shot.
Take your temperature regularly, especially if you are out and about.
Social distance from others when attending any public festivities.
Stay home if you are not feeling well. If you suspect that you may have been exposed to the virus, get tested and notify management if you have tested positive for coronavirus (we do not share your identity with neighbors).
Wash your hands frequently, and use hand sanitizer when hand washing is not an option.
Follow local and state guidelines and monitor New York State’s case rate.
Are you traveling for the holidays? Follow travel advisories and testing protocols when entering and leaving New York.
Have a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!
The holidays can be a very stressful and busy time of the year. Perhaps this year it will be a little calmer with less of the seasonal rush that comes from holiday parties, gift-giving, and events to attend. Take this time to slow down andenjoy the holiday season. Have a happy and safe holiday season!
