Spring Forward / Fall Back / Spring and Fall
Reminders for Spring Daylight Savings (Spring Forward)
- Move all clocks forward by one hour. This includes any ovens, cable boxes, clocks, watches, and any other devices that do not adjust automatically.
- Snowbirds: If you are returning to New York for the warmer weather, inform your property manager that you have returned and update your address if applicable. You may also need to notify the post office of your address switch to ensure that mail is properly forwarding to your home.
- Get your home ready for spring and summer with our preparation guides. Additionally, brush up on heat wave safety and hurricane preparedness. Hurricane Season begins in June and ends in November.
- Start planning for Independence Day festivities and other summer events such as outings to local parks.
- Review your community’s pool policies and etiquette. Additionally, inquire about pool passes and guest policies in anticipation of your co-op, condo, or HOA pool opening for the summer season.
- Get involved in your community by finding out when your annual meeting will take place and mark your calendar (they are usually scheduled for the spring).
- Do not feed animals such as birds and squirrels in your community. While they may be friendly and pleasant to our eyes and ears, they can become or attract unwanted pests.
- Take care of spring cleaning within your home.
Reminders for Fall Daylight Savings (Fall Back)
- Set all clocks and back by one hour.
- Let management know if you plan to leave New York for the winter. See our snowbirds article for reminders and tips before you leave. Provide your alternate address to your property manager if you will be residing in a different location during the fall or winter.

- Take time to winterize your home. This may include things like improving insulation, weather stripping, and repairing cracked windows.

- Since the holiday season is right around the corner, brush up on holiday home safety tips.
- Fire safety is important all year round, but winter tends to bring more hazards due to the need for heating, and holiday decorations. Make sure you are preventing fire hazards in your home.
Daylight Savings Tips for Spring and Fall
- Report any repairs to common areas or amenities to management.
- Replace expired fire extinguishers or get one if your home does not already have one.
- Take the time to review and save any important local emergency contacts to your phone of contact list(s).
- Notify management if your contact information has changed.
- Take a moment to review how you can get in touch with your property manager, and superintendent (if applicable).
- Clean out your dryer vents if you have an in-unit washer and/or dryer. The buildup in the vents can be a fire hazard if they are not cleaned out periodically.
- Go through your pantry and fridge and toss out expired food and household staples. Restock items as needed.
- Swap out the clothing in your closet and drawers for the changing season.
- Safely dispose of expired medications, but do not flush or dump these items!
- Check your carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms to make sure they are working, and replace old batteries if appropriate.
- Stock up on batteries so that you are ready for the next daylight savings in six months.
